Ask Shyra — Go DeeperShri Premanand Maharaj Ji speaks about the body as the instrument of bhakti — it needs to be kept in good working order, not pampered or mistreated. He gives clear, practical guidance on both food and sleep, not as rules to be followed out of fear but as support for the spiritual life.
On food, he teaches sattvic eating — simple, vegetarian, freshly prepared food. He says: the food you eat shapes your mind. Heavy, tamasic food makes the mind sluggish and dull; excess of any food makes it sleepy; rajasic food stirs restlessness. Sattvic food — grains, vegetables, dairy, fruits, eaten in moderate quantity — supports a clear, calm mind that can sustain bhakti. He does not make this into a rigid rule but a loving guideline: eat what keeps you light, alert, and grateful.
On sleep, he is similarly balanced. He says: do not pride yourself on how little you sleep. A tired body and mind cannot sustain good jap. Sleep properly — but do not oversleep, because excessive sleep is a form of tamas that dulls the spiritual instinct. The brahma muhurta practice requires going to bed at a reasonable hour. Protect your nights as much as your mornings. He also says: the mind that goes to sleep with God's name is more likely to wake up with it.
