Shri Premanand Maharaj Ji lives with conspicuous simplicity and speaks about it often — not as a virtue to be displayed, but as a practical necessity for spiritual life. He says: the more you need, the more your mind must work to get and keep what you need. And a mind that is constantly working for accumulation is a mind that has very little room for God.

He is not saying poverty is holy. He says: have what you need, use it gratefully, and do not let the desire for more become the driving force of your life. Contentment — santosh — is one of the great spiritual achievements. Not passive resignation, but a genuine satisfaction with what God has given you today. This is very difficult for most people, he admits. We are trained by the world to always want more. Contentment requires repeatedly choosing to recognise what is already enough.

He also speaks about simplicity of the mind — not just the lifestyle. He says: some people live simply outwardly but their minds are full of elaborate desires and comparisons. True simplicity begins in the mind. Naam jap is one of the most powerful tools for simplifying the mind — because it gives the mind one thing to do instead of a thousand. A mind that has experienced the fullness of even a few minutes of genuine naam jap begins to find that it needs less from the world, because it has found something that truly satisfies.
